The Citation read, in part:

The Cybec Foundation's commitment to philanthropy has extended to education and the University of Newcastle, and through the establishment of a $200,000 trust fund in the name of Koiki (Eddie) Mabo, the Foundation supports the training of Indigenous medical and health professionals. After reading the autobiographical Snake Cradle by Dr Roberta Sykes, Roger wanted to assist in the promotion of Aboriginal health issues and the reconciliation process. Contact with Dr Sykes introduced him to the University of Newcastle's preparatory program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Yapug, and a scholarship scheme was founded in 1999. The scheme initially supported students through the enabling program, but has now expanded to provide ongoing assistance for students successful in gaining entry to a health-related degree program at the University.

It is obvious that Roger Riordan is a very special man who not only refuses to give up, but also generously thinks of those within the community who are less fortunate or in need. His resilience and persistence serve as an inspiration to us all and I am delighted that the University of Newcastle can bestow this honour upon him.

Following the presentation, Dr Riordan gave the Occasional Address to the students.]
