Natalie Williams (2005)
Natalie Williams is a Melbourne based composer who recently completed a Masters Degree in Composition at the University of Melbourne. She completed a Bachelor of Music at the University of Adelaide in 1997 and graduated from the Elder Conservatorium with first class honours in Musicology in 1998. She has studied under Brenton Broadstock, Graeme Koehne, and John Polglase.
Her works have been commissioned and performed by national and international ensembles, including the Adelaide, Melbourne & West Australian Symphony Orchestras, The Sydney and Australian Youth Orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Song Company, Sydney’s Sprung Percussion, the Zephyr String Quartet, Adelaide Youth Orchestra, the Cameo Trio, Melbourne University Orchestra, Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, Fiorini Trio (UK), Adelaide Harmony Choir, piano soloist Mark Kruger and the Brenton Langbein String Quartet. Her output includes music for film, theatre, chamber and orchestral genres.
Natalie has been commissioned on three occasions by Symphony Australia resulting in new works for the Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. She was one of 15 Australian composers commissioned by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra to compose a Fanfare for their 75th Birthday series in 2003. She has worked with composers such as Philip Glass, Peter Sculthorpe, Brett Dean and Roger Smalley and conductors Martyn Brabbins, James Judd, Kevin Field and Professor John Hopkins. During 2001 Natalie was commissioned as the composer/sound designer for a State Theatre SA production; La Maison Suspendue (House Among the Stars) directed by Rosalba Clemente. She reached the finals of the 2001 Young Australian of the Year awards, in the Pacific Access Arts category for South Australia, and held an Australian Postgraduate Research Scholarship for Composition studies at Melbourne University.
During March 2003, Natalie attended the premieres of three newly commissioned orchestral works across Australia including; Hypersonic, a Fanfare for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Towards Unlit Skies, a choral and orchestral song cycle for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and regional community choir, and Fourth Alarm, commissioned by Ars Musica Australis for the Sydney Youth Orchestra. In 2004 Natalie worked with the Zephyr quartet in a collaborative digital animation project presented in the Space Theatre in Adelaide.
Current projects include a new piece for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for their 2005 Metropolis series and a new work commissioned by Arts Musica Australis for the Australian Youth Orchestra for performance during their 2005 Young Symphonists Program in Melbourne.
Natalie is a member of the Fellowship of Australian Composers, the Australian Music Centre and the Melbourne Composers League. She has worked in arts administration for the past four years, at the Australian National Academy of Music and on the management team of Orchestra Victoria.
Each year the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) awards six Professional Development Awards to enable promising young musicians studying different types of music to travel and study overseas. In March 2006 Natalie won the classical music award.
Natalie intends to use her APRA Professional Development Award to undertake doctoral level postgraduate study in music theory and composition offered at several overseas universities. She is also pursuing research opportunities and training courses through Harvard and Yale to expand and develop her existing skills as a composer and music theory specialist.
